Muffin Review: Civilization Blueberry

I tried to get to the West Side Market this morning to pick up apple fritters from my favorite bakery, but the bakers weren’t in yet.  As a consolation prize, I sidetracked to Tremont and the famous Civilization coffee house and picked up blueberry muffins.

The muffin is filled with blueberries, and is dense and moist.  Almost too moist – it’s almost gooey in places.  The flavor is fine, but not stellar.  The blueberries are the best part.

Jim has perhaps created a monster in me.  He taught me the ways of putting butter on a muffin, something I have avoided in the past, as muffins are usually sweet enough as is.  With the addition of a little extra butter, today’s blueberry muffin from Civilization coffee house was quite good.  It was moist and fluffy and not too packed with blueberries.  The blueberries were not too big and tasted quite good (especially with a dab of butter).  My complaint about this muffin was the lack of differentiation between the base and the crown.  I enjoy a slightly crispier crown whereas Civilization’s muffin had a moist, soft crown.
