Who is Jarrett and What is Interaction Design?

Welcome to my blog!

I’m Jim Jarrett, a software interaction designer in Cleveland, Ohio (currently). I’ve been toying with the idea of a blog for a couple years now, and I finally put my money where my mind is and got one.

Over that same time period I’ve been thinking about my personal vision for my work, where my passions lie, and how I might put that to work in a weblog form.

My personal vision consists of three elements:

Delight Our Users
Collaborate
Build Expertise

I’ll touch on each of these elements in the coming days. I’ve also got some personal writings in the interaction design world that I’ve collected over the years, and lots of pointers to other people’s expertise.

So, what is Interaction Design? In encompasses all those design disciplines involved in how a person or people interact and experience a product, particularly a product with a large software component. Other terms that are related include Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Interface Design, User Experience Design, Human Interface Design, Human Factors, Usability Engineering, etc.

I prefer the phrase Interaction Design because it captures the entirety of interaction, and it flows more easily on the tongue than HCI. However, I do mean it to include all the different elements of HCI.

For more information, see the ACM’s special interest group on Computer Human Interaction (ACM SIGCHI).

Please tune in, and let’s make software a safer place for users!

Jim
