Thermal and a Quarter: Funky and Cool Rock

I was listening to NPR the other day (I think it was The World ) and they had an Indian band called Thermal and a Quarter on.  It’s a rock band with lots of influences from 80’s rock to classical Indian music to other funky stuff.  They have a big following where they are from, and all of their tunes are free to download from their site, and they encourage sharing them.  I downloaded all 10 songs from their album Plan B (which took a while because of lots of traffic and questionable design on the process – you have to download each and agree to their non-agreement every time).

I listened through the songs once, sort of paying attention.  I thought they were okay.  But the more I listen, the more I like it.  Very bluesy with Jazz influences, Indian instruments and timing, samples, and good song-writing.  Well worth the time!  Check them out!  It’s been a long time since I was really turned on by an indie group, especially an Indian indie group.

UPDATE: I heard from members of the band.  The show was All Things Considered and they’ve changed the download to a BitTorrent of the entire album.  Apparently, they released two previous CDs in India only, but will be making all of them available in the US, probaby via CDBaby.

Hey James, thanks for the touching post.

We have also released Plan B on BitTorrent to ease the load on our overworked servers. Glad you liked us. We’ll be offering our previous albums on CDBaby real soon.

And the NPR show was All Things Considered.
