Our friend, Nonswakazi, is director of an NGO called the Foundation for South African Female Empowerment, or SAFE. They perform a vital role for the women in their communities. Below, I have attached the organization’s manifesto. I’ve also included contact information if you would like to get more information or make a contribution. We, and they, would appreciate it immensely. American dollars, and many other currencies, go a long way in South Africa. (For more information about South Africa, see South Africa in the menu at the left.)

Dedicated to Strengthening South Africa by Empowering Women and Families
SAFE Manifesto
SAFE is a pro-woman foundation that seeks to empower women in their families and communities. As South Africa continues to struggle against the legacy of apartheid, many South African women face special challenges as they combat obstacles based on race, culture, and gender. They are consistently denied education and employment opportunities.
Apartheid shattered many people’s dreams and their ability to believe in themselves. It also created whole communities of people living below the poverty level. Today intense poverty fosters high levels of crime, including rape and domestic violence.
SAFE seeks to help South African communities acknowledge the impact of our history on the present lives of women and families. SAFE ultimately strives to help women and families overcome the crippling consequences of apartheid by taking positive action, ownership and accountability in their families, jobs, communities, and government.
We seek to help all members of society recognise their potential to contribute to their communities. Through many different projects, SAFE ultimately works to empower women, because we believe that what heals the mothers of South Africa will also heal the nation which they bear.
