Turning an Old House Into a Palace

Now that we have moved into our humble little home in Baltimore, I thought I would try to track all the work we do on it over the years.  Oh yes, work has already begun, and I’ve written our first check to a contractor.  Of course, we’ll do some of the work ourselves as well.  Note that some of the items are in the near future, with bids or other planning in progress.  Also, activities like hanging pictures and other decorative elements are not included below because we are doing so constantly.

  1. Much sweeping, cleaning, and throwing out of stuff left behind by previous owner. February 2005, self
  2. Tear out cabinets to make room for larger refrigerator and dishwasher. February 2005, self
  3. New appliances: washer, dryer, dishwasher, refrigerator, toaster oven. February 2005, self
  4. Shelving and other storage to convert one upstairs bedroom to walk-in closet. February 2005, self
  5. Repair thermostat and inspect boiler and radiators that aren’t working well. February 2005, contractor
  6. Shelving in basement. February 2005, self
  7. Start picking paint colors for rooms and paint sample swatches on walls. February 2005, self
  8. Tear down ugly vertical blinds on sun porch.  Replace some with matchstick blinds. March 2005, self
  9. Run 220 line for new stove and new switched 110 line for garbage disposal. March 2005, contractor
  10. Replace cheap gas range with nice flat-top electric. March 2005, self
  11. Snake main sewer drain all the way to street. Twice.  March 2005, contractor
  12. Cap gas line from previous range. March 2005, contractor
  13. Install new window treatments in living room, kitchen, bedroom, hallway, and upstairs bath. April 2005, self [pictures]
  14. Replace all drainage pipes from kitchen to main sewer drain; new sink, disposal, and faucet in kitchen. April 2005, contractor
  15. Rip out old bushes, aerate lawn, and reseed. May 2005, self
  16. Install high-velocity air-conditioner/strip heater system. May 2005, contractor [pictures]
  17. Plant potted herbs and flowers, create initial garden bed.  May 2005, self
  18. Upgrade insulation throughout house. May 2005, contractor
  19. Remove 40 foot holly bush from back yard.  May 2005, contractor [pictures]
  20. Demolish old shed because it encroaches on rear neighbors’ land. July 2005, self [pictures]
